For an arboreal species that rarely descends to the forest floor, a road represents an impassable chasm. Moving forward, this case underscores the importance of “Net Gain” biodiversity policies in infrastructure planning. Rather than treating wildlife crossings as an afterthought, they should be integrated into the initial design phase of road and rail projects. The Sumatran experience proves that artificial corridors can bridge the gap between economic development and ecological preservation, provided there is a sustained commitment from non-governmental organizations and state authorities alike. By facilitating the movement of a single orangutan, this project has effectively reopened a genetic lifeline, offering a reprieve from the specter of inbreeding and a renewed hope for the species’ persistence in a fragmented world.
